Chapter 60 - The Eternal Gardener

Ramón leaned back in his rocking chair, closing his eyes as the warm, golden sunlight washed over his face.

He listened to the sound of Julian and the younger boys laughing in the distant orchard. He listened to the steady, comforting rustle of the oak leaves above the roof.

He felt Teresa’s presence waiting for him in the gentle wind.

He took one final, deep, peaceful breath of the sweet valley air, and quietly, beautifully slipped away into the eternal sleep.

The gardener had finally rested.

But as Mateo stood up, looking out over the sprawling, majestic, entirely untouchable empire of soil, water, and green leaves, he knew that his father had not truly left them.
