Chapter 47 - The Wall of Heat

The convoy of tractors and bulldozers roared toward the northern border of the orchards.
The heat radiating from the mountain was already unbearable. The night sky was completely entirely choked with thick, black smoke and glowing red embers raining down like a localized apocalypse.
Mateo led the charge. He climbed into the cab of the heaviest bulldozer, dropped the massive steel blade into the earth, and began violently ripping up the dry brush, creating a barren strip of dirt designed to starve the approaching fire.
Clara and the other women coordinated the water trucks, spraying thousands of gallons onto the fruit trees closest to the border, trying to create a damp shield against the heat.
"It's moving too fast!"
Julian shouted over the deafening roar of the flames, his face covered in black soot.

"Keep digging!"
Mateo roared back, his eyes completely locked onto the terrifying wall of fire cresting the ridge.
