The next morning, three luxury SUVs rolled into the local town square.
The executives of Apex Holdings did not hide in the shadows. They walked directly into the local agricultural cooperative, demanding to meet with the farmers who relied on the river.
The lead executive, a ruthless man named Sterling, stood at the front of the room.
"We have acquired the developmental rights to the upper river valley,"
Sterling announced smoothly, displaying a massive, colorful chart of a proposed commercial dam.
"We are willing to buy your farms at a twenty percent premium. If you refuse, the water stops flowing on the first of the month."
The local farmers murmured in absolute panic. A twenty percent premium was a pittance compared to the generational value of their land, but a drought meant utter bankruptcy.
