The arrests of the local police and the destruction of the dam sent shockwaves all the way to the corporate headquarters in the city.
Victor, Valeria’s father, realized his brute-force tactics had failed miserably.
In a desperate, final attempt to secure the land, Valeria herself returned to the valley. She appeared at the courthouse, flanked by a team of expensive, slick lawyers, filing an emergency injunction based on an obscure, century-old property law.
She stood in the hallway of the courthouse, glaring at Ramón as he walked in with Mateo and Clara.
"You should have taken the money, gardener,"
Valeria hissed, her eyes filled with venomous hatred.
"You can't dig your way out of a federal courtroom."
"I don't need to dig, Valeria,"
