Chapter 17 - A Letter from the City

The peace was broken by the arrival of a sleek, black courier vehicle kicking up dust on their private road.

A man in a sharp suit stepped out, holding a thick, embossed envelope. He looked around the farm with undisguised disdain before approaching the porch where Ramón was repairing a leather bridle.

"Ramón Silva?"

The courier asked, his tone clipped and professional.

"I am Ramón,"

He replied, not looking up from his work.

"You have been served,"

The man stated, dropping the heavy envelope onto the wooden porch before turning around and driving away.

Mateo walked out of the house, wiping his hands on a towel. He picked up the envelope and tore it open, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon.

"What is it?"

Ramón asked, setting the bridle down.

"It's from a firm called Apex Holdings,"

Mateo said, his face paling slightly.

"They are claiming that the liquidation of Valeria’s estate did not cover a specific municipal water deed. They are claiming they own the rights to the river that feeds our irrigation system."
