Chapter 6 - The Ascent

The grand staircase of the mansion was curved, carved from white marble, and lined with a wrought-iron balustrade. Julian ascended the steps with slow, measured precision. He carried Lily effortlessly, her weight a comforting anchor against the raging storm of betrayal brewing in his chest. The warm chandelier light from the main hallway gradually faded, replaced by the cooler, softer illumination of the upper residential floor.
Julian’s facial expression remained completely stoic, but the subtle, rhythmic clenching of his jaw betrayed the violent emotions he was suppressing. He did not look back at Eleanor. He did not acknowledge the murmurs of the confused guests downstairs. His entire universe had narrowed down to the traumatized child trembling against his white dress shirt.
Lily’s heavy sobbing had subsided into quiet, exhausted sniffles. Her small fingers remained tightly curled into the lapel of his black tuxedo.
He carried her into her bedroom, a sanctuary of pastel colors and soft lighting. He gently lowered her onto the edge of the large bed, kneeling before her so they were at eye level. Julian took a small, deliberate pause, regulating his own breathing to ensure his demeanor projected nothing but absolute safety and calm.
He reached out, his large hand gently smoothing the ruffled hair away from her tear-streaked face.
"You are safe here, Lily."
His voice was a low, steady rumble in the quiet room.
Lily looked at him, her wide, innocent eyes still holding the ghost of the panic she had felt inside that dark, suffocating closet. She sniffled, her chin trembling slightly.
"She looked so angry, Daddy. Her eyes were scary."
Julian’s eye movement slowed. A micro-expression of profound pain crossed his features before he locked it away behind a mask of paternal strength. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a pristine white silk handkerchief, and carefully wiped the tears and dust from her cheeks.
"No one will ever look at you like that again."
Julian paused, ensuring she held his gaze.
"I promise you."
He stood up slowly, adjusting his tuxedo jacket with a practiced, restrained movement. He walked over to the heavy wooden door of her bedroom.

"Stay here. I will be right back."
Julian closed the door with a soft, quiet click, leaving her in the safety of her room. The moment the latch engaged, the protective father vanished. Julian stood in the dimly lit upstairs hallway, his eyes darkening into a cold, lethal void. It was time to face the bride.
