Chapter 57 - The Absolute Surrender

Julian released his grip on Elias’s throat. Elias collapsed onto the floor, coughing violently, clutching his broken ribs. The arrogant, untouchable architect of The Directorate looked pathetic, completely broken by a man who refused to be a pawn.
"You understand the terms?" Julian demanded, standing over him.
Elias looked up, seeing the absolute, lethal finality in Julian's eyes. He knew Julian wasn't bluffing. The dead-man's switch was the ultimate leverage—mutually assured destruction.
"I understand," Elias wheezed, defeat evident in every syllable. "Your file will be purged. You are a ghost, Julian. We will never contact you again."
"Good," Julian said.
He turned his back on the broken man, holstering his weapon. He didn't run. He walked slowly and purposefully out of the shattered office, back through the crimson-lit hallways, stepping over the groaning guards.
He had not just survived the storm; he had commanded it. He had taken the most powerful shadow organization in the world and put a leash around their necks.

As Julian descended the emergency stairwell, the blaring alarms began to fade into the background. The lethal enforcer, the apex predator, was slowly retreating back into the earth. The job was done. The fortress was finally, truly impenetrable.
He walked out into the rainy Chicago streets, pulling his collar up against the cold, and dialed a number on his secure phone.
