Chapter 2 - The Dark Wood

The hallway was quiet, the sophisticated chatter of the wedding guests fading into a distant, muffled hum. Julian walked with measured, deliberate steps. The warm, high-contrast indoor lighting created long, stretched shadows that clung to his black tuxedo. As he passed the family photo frames hanging on the wall, his eyes scanned every corner, every alcove, searching for the small figure in the white satin dress.
The silence of the corridor was suddenly broken by a sound.
It was faint. A muffled, desperate whimper.
Julian stopped completely. His subtle, natural breathing hitched. He slowly turned his head, his dark eyes narrowing as he traced the origin of the sound. It was coming from the end of the hall.
He walked faster, his polished shoes clicking against the hardwood floor. At the very end of the corridor stood a massive, dark wooden closet. It was an antique piece, heavy and imposing, typically used for storing winter coats and unused linens. The whimpering was undeniably coming from inside.
Julian’s deep concern instantly flared into a protective surge of adrenaline. He didn't hesitate. He stepped up to the dark wooden door, his large hand gripping the brass handle.
With explosive speed and violent force, Julian slammed and yanked the heavy wooden closet door open.
The hinges groaned loudly in protest. The sudden influx of warm chandelier light pierced the pitch-black interior. There, huddled in the dusty corner beneath a row of clothes on wooden hangers, was Lily.
She was curled into a tight ball, her delicate sleeveless white satin dress wrinkled and smudged with dust. The beautiful pearl collar was askew. She was sobbing heavily, her tiny shoulders shaking with each traumatic gasp for air.
Julian’s heart shattered. He aggressively reached in, his strong hands grabbing her gently but firmly by the shoulders, pulling her small, trembling body out of the suffocating darkness of the closet.
Just as he pulled her into the light, a sharp gasp echoed behind him.
Julian didn't turn around, but he heard the rustle of a lace dress. Eleanor had followed him. Behind her stood Arthur and Martha, another older woman, both frozen in the hallway, drawn by the violent sound of the door opening.
Eleanor stood a few feet away, her blonde hair catching the light. Her face was a perfect portrait of sheer, unadulterated horror. She brought a hand up to her chest, her eyes wide as she looked at the crying child.

"Why is she in there?!"
Eleanor gasped in panic, her voice ringing out in the quiet hallway. It sounded like genuine shock. It looked like genuine concern. But Julian, kneeling on the floor with his weeping daughter, felt an icy chill run down his spine. The timing of Eleanor's arrival was too perfect. Her panic felt just a fraction too rehearsed.
