Chapter 32 - The Grand Hall

The Global Philanthropy Gala was hosted at the city’s premier modern art museum—a sprawling architecture of steel, glass, and stark white marble. Outside, a sea of paparazzi flashed blinding white lights against the arriving limousines.

Julian’s armored black SUV glided to a halt at the edge of the red carpet. The heavy door was opened by a valet. Julian stepped out into the chaotic flashing lights. He did not wave. He did not offer a forced, generic smile to the cameras. His facial expression remained a mask of pure, cinematic stoicism. He walked up the carpet with slow, measured steps, ignoring the shouted questions from the press.

Inside the grand hall, the atmosphere was a suffocating blend of expensive perfume, string quartet music, and the low hum of the city’s elite. The lighting was high-contrast—dramatic spotlights illuminated the abstract sculptures, while the rest of the room bathed in a warm, amber glow.

Julian walked into the room. The subtle, natural shift in his posture communicated an immediate dominance over the space. He did not scan the room frantically. His slow eye movement tracked the crowd, processing faces, exits, and sightlines.

"Mr. Julian," a voice crackled softly in the discreet, custom-molded earpiece hidden in his right ear. It was Elias, coordinating from a mobile command center outside. "You have crossed the perimeter. All biometric scanners are active. Every individual in that room is currently being cross-referenced with our threat database."

"Understood," Julian whispered back, moving his lips minimally.

He accepted a glass of sparkling water from a passing waiter. He did not drink. He held the thin crystal glass loosely in his hand, a prop to blend into the scenery.

This was the exact room where he had met Eleanor. He remembered the precise spot near the ice sculpture where she had "accidentally" bumped into him, spilling champagne on his shoes. The memory did not invoke sadness. It only sharpened his lethal focus. He walked slowly toward the VIP balcony overlooking the main floor, positioning himself in a spot that offered a clear vantage point of the entire gala. He was the bait, standing perfectly still in the center of the trap.
