Chapter 48 - The Panic

In a high-rise glass tower in downtown Chicago, Elias sat in his immaculate office, reviewing satellite imagery of Geneva. His secure terminal suddenly began emitting a sharp, piercing alarm.

Elias frowned, tapping the screen. The financial dashboard, which displayed the real-time liquidity of The Directorate’s global operations, was flashing a catastrophic error message.

FUNDS INACCESSIBLE. ENCRYPTION CORRUPTED.

The door to Elias’s office burst open. A senior analyst ran in, his face pale with terror.

"Sir, we've lost connection to the Cayman node. The entire shadow ledger has been scrambled. The keys are randomized."

"Who did this?" Elias demanded, standing up.

"The intrusion signature was masked, but it originated locally from within the Cayman vault. Sir, we have no liquidity. We can't pay the strike teams, we can't fund the politicians. We are completely blind."

Elias stared at the screen, a chilling realization washing over him. Julian hadn't gone to Geneva. Julian had struck them where it hurt the most.

Elias picked up his encrypted phone and dialed the number he had given Julian. It went straight to a dead signal.

"He isn't running," Elias whispered to himself, a genuine flicker of fear igniting in his chest. "He is hunting us."

Elias turned to his security chief.

"Lock down this building. Double the guards on every floor. And send the Alpha Team to Julian’s mountain estate. I want his house burned to the ground. If he loves that fortress so much, he can die in the ashes of it."
