Chapter 58 - The Return

The phone rang twice before a deep voice answered.

"Viktor."

"It is done," Julian said, his voice exhausted but steady. "The threat is neutralized. Permanently."

"I knew it would be, brother," Viktor replied warmly. "The package is safe. She's been drawing pictures of horses all afternoon. She asked when you were coming to pick her up."

Julian felt a profound, heavy weight lift from his shoulders. The tension that had coiled in his spine since Elias first stepped onto his mountain estate completely unraveled.

"Tell her I'm on my way," Julian said, a genuine smile touching his lips for the first time in days.

Julian discarded the encrypted phone in a storm drain. He walked to the stolen utility van, climbed inside, and began the long drive back to Seattle. The rain slowly ceased as he drove westward, the dark, stormy clouds giving way to the faint, purple hues of the approaching dawn.

He drove for hours, the rhythmic hum of the engine the only sound in the quiet cabin. He didn't listen to the radio. He just thought about the future. A future where he didn't have to check the perimeter every night. A future where he was truly, unequivocally free.
