Chapter 45 - The Sanctuary

Julian drove the reinforced SUV without headlights down the winding mountain road, using his night-vision optics to navigate the treacherous curves. Lily sat in the back seat, remarkably calm, clutching her stuffed bear.

By dawn, they had crossed two state lines, arriving at an abandoned industrial park on the outskirts of Seattle. Julian drove the vehicle into a rusted, empty warehouse. He stopped in front of a solid concrete wall and flashed his headlights in a specific, rhythmic sequence.

A section of the concrete wall hissed and slid open, revealing a brightly lit, subterranean bunker. Standing inside was Viktor, a massive, bearded man with a scarred face. Viktor had been Julian's quartermaster and closest ally during his dark years.

"Julian," Viktor grunted, his eyes shifting to the young girl in the back seat. "You brought the package."

"They found me, Viktor," Julian said, stepping out of the car. "The Directorate."

Viktor’s expression darkened.

"I need you to keep her safe," Julian continued, opening the back door for Lily. "This bunker is off the grid. It has enough food and air filtration for six months. No one gets in. No one."

"She is safe with me, brother," Viktor swore, resting a heavy hand on his sidearm. "What are you going to do?"

Julian pulled the encrypted burner phone from his pocket, staring at the blank screen.

"They gave me forty-eight hours to kill a man in Geneva. They think I'm booking a flight."

"And instead?"

Julian looked at Viktor, his eyes burning with absolute, lethal conviction.

"Instead, I am going to tear their entire organization down to the bedrock."
