Chapter 23 - The Silent Boardroom

The atmosphere in the executive boardroom of Julian’s corporate headquarters was a vacuum of absolute silence. Twelve of the most powerful executives in the company sat around the massive, oval mahogany table. The room was bathed in cool, diffused light, casting sharp shadows across their tense faces.

Julian sat at the head of the table. He was not looking at any spreadsheets or quarterly reports. He was looking at the men and women sitting before him. His dark, slicked-back hair and impeccably tailored suit gave him the appearance of a modern monarch holding court.

For two agonizingly long minutes, Julian did not speak. He weaponized the silence. His slow eye movement shifted from one executive to the next, observing their subtle micro-expressions. The nervous swallows. The slight shifting in their leather chairs. He was looking for a leak.

Finally, Julian leaned back in his chair.

"Yesterday," Julian’s low baritone voice broke the silence, sending a quiet shockwave through the room. "I discovered that my personal life had been severely compromised by corporate espionage."

He paused, letting the weight of the word espionage settle over the table.

"Eleanor was an operative for Victor Thorne."

A collective, quiet gasp rippled through the executives. Several faces turned pale. Victor’s name was taboo within these walls.

Julian raised a single hand, his movement slow and deliberate, instantly silencing the room.

"I am not here to discuss my private affairs," Julian continued, his voice devoid of any vulnerability. "I am here to amputate the remaining infection."

He slid a heavy, black leather folder across the table toward the center.

"Victor Thorne could not have placed her in my proximity without internal assistance. Someone in this building fabricated her background checks. Someone provided her with the itineraries of the charity galas where we 'coincidentally' met."

Julian’s eyes locked onto a man sitting halfway down the table. David, the Vice President of Acquisitions.

"David."

David flinched. A microscopic bead of sweat formed on his temple. "Yes, Julian?"

"You sponsored her entry into the philanthropic board last year," Julian stated, his tone perfectly flat, presenting a fact rather than a question.

"I... I did, yes," David stuttered, his hands trembling slightly as he gripped his pen. "But Julian, I swear, I thought her credentials were real. The background check firm—"

"The firm you personally selected," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper.

Julian stood up slowly. The cinematic camera angle would focus on the sheer, intimidating presence of his posture. He did not yell. He did not pound his fists on the table.

"Your access cards have been deactivated," Julian said. "Your stock options are frozen pending a federal investigation into corporate sabotage. Security is waiting outside the glass doors to escort you from the premises."

David looked up, his eyes wide with sheer panic. He opened his mouth to argue, but the absolute, chilling finality in Julian’s dark eyes paralyzed his vocal cords. The executive stood up, his face flushed with humiliation, and walked out of the silent boardroom.

Julian slowly sat back down. He looked at the remaining eleven executives.

"Consider this a cleansing," Julian murmured, his jaw clenching. "We are at war."
