Chapter 37 - The Trace

In the brutalist penthouse overlooking the Thames, the blue light of the computer monitors reflected in the thin layer of sweat that had suddenly formed on Victor Thorne’s forehead. He sat rigidly in his high-backed leather chair, the heavy satellite phone pressed against his ear.

He realized his mistake the moment Julian spoke. Julian wasn't calling to negotiate. Julian was calling to hold him in place.

Victor’s eye movement darted toward the central monitor. He frantically typed a command to check the encryption status of the line.

"You sent a man to my gala to remind me that you exist," Julian’s voice continued smoothly through the earpiece, an unnatural, chilling calm radiating from the speaker. "But you forgot the golden rule of our old partnership, Victor. If you reach into my house, you give me the coordinates of your hand."

A red warning box suddenly flashed across Victor’s screen.

INCOMING TRACE: FIREWALL BREACH.

Julian hadn’t just called him. While Julian held him on the line, Julian’s cyber-warfare team was using the proxy’s unencrypted phone to reverse-engineer the signal, tearing through Victor’s digital defenses in real-time.

Victor’s hands began to tremble. It was a microscopic loss of motor control, a manifestation of pure, unadulterated dread. He reached for his glass of scotch, but his fingers slipped against the condensation, rattling the crystal against the desk.

"You are locked out, Victor," Julian whispered. The cinematic realism of the moment was profound—Julian was thousands of miles away, yet he was completely dismantling Victor’s physical reality. "The servers in your penthouse are currently wiping themselves. The security cameras in your lobby have been disabled. The elevators have been locked down."

Victor stared at his screens. One by one, the blue monitors flashed bright white before turning completely, permanently black. The hum of the servers died, leaving the concrete penthouse in suffocating silence.

"What are you doing, Julian?" Victor breathed, his voice cracking. He was trapped in his own fortress.

"I am turning off the lights," Julian replied softly.

Click. Julian ended the call.
