Chapter 22 - The Ghost in the Machine

Half a world away, in a brutalist concrete penthouse overlooking the gray, churning waters of the Thames in London, the atmosphere was thick with cigar smoke and the low hum of computer servers. The room was dark, illuminated only by the harsh, blue light of half a dozen massive monitors lining the walls.
Victor Thorne sat in a high-backed leather chair. He was a man in his late forties, his hair heavily silvered at the temples, wearing an expensive, albeit unbuttoned, charcoal vest. He held a crystal glass of scotch in his hand. The ice clinked softly against the glass as he swirled the amber liquid.
On the central monitor, a silent news feed played a continuous loop. It was a leaked, blurry photograph of Eleanor being escorted into a police vehicle in her ruined white lace wedding dress.
Victor did not throw his glass. He did not scream in frustration. His facial micro-expressions were entirely controlled, reflecting a man calculating his losses with psychopathic detachment. He took a slow drag from his cigar, exhaling a thick plume of gray smoke that drifted across the screens.
"She was sloppy," Victor murmured to the empty room.
He leaned forward, placing the heavy crystal glass onto his desk. His eye movement was sharp, assessing the collateral damage. Eleanor’s infiltration of Julian’s life had been a masterpiece of long-term manipulation, taking over a year to orchestrate. Her objective had been to gain access to the biometric vault codes within Julian’s private study during the honeymoon, codes that protected the proprietary algorithms of Julian’s entire empire.
The torn card had been a test—a cruel reminder from Victor to ensure Eleanor remained obedient. He hadn't anticipated that she would panic. He certainly hadn't anticipated that a seven-year-old child would be the catalyst for her downfall.
Victor reached out and tapped a few keys on his mechanical keyboard. A complex, encrypted communication channel opened on his screen.
"Status," Victor typed.
A few seconds later, a reply materialized in green text. The asset is compromised. Julian has the card. He knows you are involved.
Victor stared at the text. A slow, chilling smile touched the corners of his mouth. The cinematic realism of his reaction was deeply unsettling—it was the smile of a predator who realized the stealth phase of the hunt was over, and the violent phase had just begun.

"Julian has always been too protective," Victor whispered, his eyes narrowing into a cold glare. "He thinks he has built a fortress. Let’s test the walls."
He began to type his next command, initiating a sequence that would set the global financial markets ablaze.
