Chapter 8 - Echoes in the Dark

They moved into the presidential penthouse of a luxury hotel in the city center. It was a beautiful, sprawling suite with modern, minimalist decor and massive windows overlooking the glittering skyline.
Despite the absolute safety of their new surroundings, the psychological trauma of being trapped in the dark refused to fade easily.
Elena tried to maintain a brave face during the day. She fed Julian, she smiled when Daniel kissed her, and she spoke to her therapists over secure video calls. But when the sun went down, the shadows began to creep back into the edges of her mind.
It was 3:00 AM on a quiet Tuesday night.
Daniel was jolted entirely awake by a horrifying, blood-curdling scream.
He bolted upright in the king-sized bed. Elena was thrashing wildly against the heavy silk duvet, her eyes squeezed tightly shut, her hands clawing desperately at the air above her as if she were trying to push against an invisible wooden lid.
"Elena!"
Daniel shouted, his heart leaping into his throat.
"Get it off me! I can't breathe! Please, god, let me out!"
Elena shrieked hysterically, trapped entirely inside a horrific night terror.
Daniel didn't hesitate. He grabbed her wrists gently but firmly, pulling her thrashing body flush against his own, wrapping her in a tight, inescapable, protective embrace.
"I'm here! Elena, open your eyes! I'm right here!"
Daniel commanded, his voice loud enough to break through the hallucination, yet thick with absolute devotion.
Elena gasped violently, snapping her eyes open. Her chest heaved with ragged, panicked breaths. She looked wildly around the dark bedroom, her pupils dilated with sheer terror, before finally focusing on Daniel’s face in the dim moonlight.
"Daniel?"
She whimpered, her body shaking uncontrollably.
"It was so dark. I could smell the satin. I was scratching at the wood, and nobody could hear me."
"You are not in the box, my love,"
Daniel murmured, his voice a steady, unbreakable anchor in the storm of her panic. He rocked her gently back and forth, kissing her hair, her forehead, and her tear-stained cheeks over and over again.
"You are in our bed. You are safe. The monsters are locked away in their own cages, and they can never touch you again."
"Don't turn off the lamp,"
Elena sobbed, clinging to his shirt like a drowning woman holding onto a life raft.
"I will never let the room go dark again,"
May you like
Daniel promised fiercely, reaching over and clicking the bedside lamp to its highest setting, flooding the room with warm, golden light.
He held her tightly for the rest of the night, watching the sun slowly rise over the city, silently vowing to build her a fortress where the shadows could never reach her again.
