Chapter 21 - The Morning After

The morning after the gala, the coastal fortress was bathed in a brilliant, peaceful sunlight.
Elena sat at the marble kitchen island, sipping a cup of dark coffee. Her phone was buzzing relentlessly with notifications. The Julian Hope Initiative had received over fifty million dollars in anonymous donations overnight.
Daniel walked into the kitchen, wearing a simple white t-shirt and dark sweatpants, his hair damp from the shower.
"We broke every single fundraising record in the state,"
Elena smiled, looking up at him with bright, triumphant eyes.
"You broke the records, Elena,"
Daniel corrected her, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss to her forehead.
"Your speech is on the front page of every major news outlet in the country."
Julian ran into the kitchen, his tiny bare feet slapping against the hardwood floor, holding a toy airplane.
"Daddy! Look how fast it goes!"
May you like
Julian giggled, running circles around the kitchen island.
Daniel scooped his son up, lifting him high into the air. The heavy, dark weight of the past was completely gone, replaced by the pure, unadulterated joy of a normal, beautiful morning.
