Chapter 17 - The Painting
That afternoon, when Daniel picked him up from school, Julian came running out of the classroom clutching a slightly crumpled piece of construction paper.
It was a messy, highly colorful crayon masterpiece depicting three crooked, smiling stick figures standing outside a large square house with massive, oversized windows.
"This is me, and Mommy, and Daddy!"
Julian explained proudly, pointing a tiny finger at the three stick figures holding hands.
"It is a beautiful masterpiece, buddy,"
Daniel smiled gently, examining the artwork.
"And what is this massive yellow circle?"
Daniel asked, pointing to a gigantic, bright yellow scribble that completely covered the entire top half of the page.
"That's the sun, Daddy,"
Julian stated simply, looking up with his wide, innocent dark eyes.
"It is always shining on our house."

Daniel felt a sudden, massive lump form in his throat. He pulled his son into a tight hug, closing his eyes against the sudden rush of emotional tears.
The very next day, Daniel had the messy crayon drawing professionally framed in expensive mahogany. He hung it directly in the absolute center of his sleek, modern home office, a permanent, glaring reminder of the ultimate, glorious victory they had achieved.
