Chapter 11 - Unopened and Unread

The air in the kitchen grew heavy. The specter of the woman who had ordered Elena to be buried alive suddenly loomed over the pristine, sunlit space.
"Are you going to open it?"
Elena asked softly, bouncing Julian gently on her hip to keep him asleep. Her dark eyes searched Daniel’s face, watching for any sign of hesitation or lingering trauma.
Daniel looked down at the envelope. He thought about the decades of psychological manipulation, the endless lies, and the sheer, sociopathic greed that had defined his entire childhood.
He looked back at his beautiful, resilient wife, and the healthy, thriving son who had miraculously saved them all.
"No,"
Daniel stated with absolute, unshakeable finality.
He did not need to read her pathetic excuses. He did not need to decipher her manipulative apologies or her desperate demands. The woman who had orchestrated the murder of his family did not deserve a single second of his time, nor a single ounce of his emotional energy.
He walked over to the stainless-steel kitchen sink.
He turned on the gas burner of the nearby stove with a sharp click.
Daniel held the edge of the cheap prison envelope directly to the bright blue flame.
The dry, coarse paper caught fire instantly.
He dropped the burning envelope into the metal sink, watching the bright orange flames consume the paper. He watched her handwriting turn black, curl in on itself, and disintegrate into fragile, meaningless gray ash.
When the fire naturally died out, Daniel reached out and turned on the cold water faucet.
The rushing water washed the dark, wet ashes directly down the drain, erasing her final attempt at communication from the earth forever.
"She is gone,"
May you like
Daniel murmured, wiping his hands on a towel and walking over to kiss his wife gently on the lips.
"And she is never coming back."
