Chapter 2 – The Woman They Tried to Bury

Chapter 2 – The Woman They Tried to Bury

The ambulance sirens shattered the suffocating silence that had filled the mansion.
Daniel refused to let anyone touch Elena until the paramedics arrived.
"They drugged her," he said firmly as they lifted her from the coffin onto a stretcher. "She's alive. The baby is alive. Treat this as attempted murder."
One paramedic examined the bruises around Elena's neck.
Another checked the fetal heartbeat.
The monitor immediately filled the room with the strongest sound Daniel had ever heard.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
His son's heartbeat.
Strong.
Steady.
One of the paramedics looked directly at Daniel.
"If you'd arrived even another hour later..."
He hesitated.
"...we would have been transporting two bodies instead of two patients."
Daniel climbed into the ambulance without looking back.
Behind him, detectives who had accompanied emergency responders began sealing off the mansion.
His mother protested immediately.
"This is absurd! That woman had a heart condition!"
Marcus calmly stepped forward.
"My brother just came home from a war zone. He's emotional."
The lead detective wasn't listening.
Instead, he stared at the coffin.
"No funeral home prepared this body."
He pointed toward Elena's wrist.
"There isn't a single embalming mark."
The room fell silent.
Then another officer carefully lifted the funeral pillow.
Hidden beneath it was an empty syringe.
Marcus's confident smile disappeared.
Three hours later...
The intensive care waiting room smelled of coffee and antiseptic.
Daniel sat alone, still wearing the same clothes from his eighteen-hour flight.
Finally, a doctor emerged.
"Mr. Hayes?"
Daniel jumped to his feet.
"Your wife is alive."
Every muscle in his body weakened.
"But she was injected with an extremely powerful sedative," the doctor continued.
"Whoever administered it calculated the dosage carefully—enough to make her appear dead while slowing her heartbeat to nearly undetectable levels."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"And my son?"
The doctor smiled for the first time.
"He may have saved both of their lives."
Daniel frowned.
"The baby's repeated movements likely prevented complete oxygen deprivation. Without those kicks... your wife might never have awakened."
Tears finally escaped Daniel's eyes.
His son had fought for his mother before taking his first breath.
Across town...
Marcus unlocked a hidden office inside the family's corporate headquarters.
His hands shook as he opened a locked safe.
Empty.
Every hard drive.
Every financial ledger.
Gone.
"What?"
He frantically searched every drawer.
Nothing remained except a single black envelope.
Inside lay one sheet of paper.
CONFIDENTIAL AUDIT — FINAL REPORT
Across the top, stamped in red:
AUTHORIZED BY DANIEL HAYES
Marcus's face drained of color.
The audit hadn't started after Daniel returned.
It had started six months earlier.
Daniel had secretly suspected someone inside the family business long before leaving Abu Dhabi.
Everything Marcus had stolen...
Every fake contract...
Every offshore account...
Every forged signature...
Had already been documented.
