Chapter 13 - First Steps into the Light

Time flowed beautifully and peacefully in their coastal sanctuary.

Julian was now a bright, incredibly observant, and fiercely energetic one-year-old. He possessed Daniel's thick, dark hair and Elena's brilliant, fiercely intelligent eyes.

One warm Saturday afternoon, the massive sliding glass doors of the living room were pushed wide open, letting the gentle, salty ocean breeze sweep through the house.

Daniel was sitting on the plush living room rug, holding his hands out wide.

"Come here, buddy. You can do it,"

Daniel encouraged gently, a massive, warm smile spreading across his face.

Julian stood near the edge of the glass coffee table, his tiny, chubby hands gripping the edge tightly. He looked at his father, his dark eyes wide with intense concentration.

He let go of the table.

His tiny legs wobbled slightly. He took one hesitant, shaky step forward.

"That's it! Keep going!"

Daniel cheered softly.

Julian took a second step, then a third, his confidence suddenly blooming. With a joyous, bubbling giggle, the toddler practically launched himself forward, falling safely into Daniel's waiting, massive arms.

"I've got you!"

Daniel laughed loudly, lifting his son high into the air, spinning him around as the boy shrieked with pure delight.

Elena stood in the doorway of the kitchen, leaning against the frame, watching her boys.
