Chapter 1

I Came Home From the UAE to Find My Nine-Months-Pregnant Wife Lying in a Coffin—Then Her Belly Moved

For eighteen months in Abu Dhabi, I counted every hour until I could finally come home to Elena and meet the son we had dreamed about.

Every overtime shift, every lonely night, every sacrifice had one purpose—to return to my family.

But the moment I stepped through the front door of my own house, I knew something was terribly wrong.

The living room was filled with white lilies.

Men in black suits stood whispering beneath the crystal chandelier.

And in the center of the room sat a polished mahogany coffin.

Inside it...

Lay my wife.

Elena.

Nine months pregnant.

Dressed in a white lace gown.

She looked almost peaceful.

Almost.

My mother stood beside the coffin in a black velvet dress, her expression cold, her eyes completely dry.

"She and the baby died suddenly," she said flatly. "Don't make a scene, Daniel."

Behind her, my older brother Marcus casually swirled a glass of Scotch as though this were nothing more than another family gathering.

"You were gone too long," he said with a faint smile. "We took care of everything."

Something inside me refused to believe them.

I stepped closer.

My hands trembled as I pulled back the funeral cloth covering Elena.

Immediately, I saw it.

A dark bruise wrapped around her neck.

Another stained her upper arm.

My military medical training screamed that something wasn't right.

Then...

Beneath the delicate lace covering her swollen stomach—

Her belly moved.

A powerful kick.

My son.

Alive.

Instinct took over.

I grabbed Elena's wrist.

For one terrifying second...

Nothing.

Then, beneath my fingertips—

A pulse.

Weak.

Slow.

But unmistakably alive.

My mother lunged forward and grabbed my shoulder.

"Daniel, stop this hysteria!" she snapped. "You're embarrassing this family!"

I shoved her away.

Marcus stepped toward me.

I drove him backward with both hands and roared,

"Call an ambulance!"

"She's alive!"

"She's heavily sedated!"

The room fell into stunned silence.

Every guest froze.

Every face turned pale.

Then I looked directly at the two people who had tried to bury my wife and unborn child before I ever made it home.

My voice became colder than either of them had ever heard.

"The final audit of your lives has just been authorized."

I had returned from overseas expecting to hold my wife and newborn son.

Instead, I found them prepared for burial inside my own home.

But one tiny movement beneath a funeral cloth exposed a nightmare no one in that room saw coming.

Why had my own mother and brother rushed to bury Elena before I returned?
