Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Foyer

Three days later, the medical staff finally cleared Elena and Julian for discharge.
The drive back to the sprawling Hayes estate was tense. Daniel had hired a private tactical security detail to escort them, ensuring that not a single reporter or paparazzi could get close to their armored SUV. But as they pulled through the massive, wrought-iron gates of the estate, Daniel felt a cold knot of dread forming in his stomach.
The luxurious mansion, with its towering stone pillars and expansive, manicured gardens, no longer felt like a symbol of success. It felt like a mausoleum.
The private security guards secured the perimeter before Daniel stepped out of the vehicle. He opened the back door, gently helping Elena out before carefully unbuckling Julian’s car seat.
They walked up the grand stone steps together. The massive double oak doors were pulled open by the remaining, thoroughly vetted household staff.
"Welcome home, Mr. and Mrs. Hayes,"
The head butler greeted them, his voice hushed and incredibly cautious, aware of the horrific trauma that had recently unfolded.
"It's Vance now, Gregory,"
Daniel corrected him coldly, carrying the car seat over the threshold.
Daniel stepped into the grand, multi-story foyer, bathed in the light of the massive crystal chandelier hanging from the vaulted ceiling.
He stopped completely dead in his tracks. His perfectly polished dress shoes refused to take another step across the imported Italian marble floor.
Elena, walking right beside him, suddenly gasped, a sharp, terrifying intake of air that sounded exactly like a woman drowning.
In the absolute center of the foyer, directly beneath the glittering chandelier, was an empty space. But to Daniel and Elena, it wasn't empty.
Their minds vividly projected the image of the polished, heavy mahogany coffin sitting perfectly still on its velvet-draped pedestal. They could almost smell the sickeningly sweet scent of the white lilies that had surrounded it. They could almost hear the fake, pathetic weeping of his mother and Marcus as they played the roles of grieving family members.
"Daniel..."
Elena choked out, her hands flying to her chest, her breathing becoming rapid, shallow, and entirely panicked.
"I can't... I can't be in here."
"I know. I've got you. Look at me, Elena,"
Daniel commanded softly, immediately dropping the car seat gently onto a side table and wrapping his arms securely around her trembling shoulders.
"It's so cold in here,"
Elena sobbed, squeezing her eyes shut, fighting a vicious, aggressive flashback of the suffocating darkness.
"I can feel the wood against my hands. I can feel the lid."
Daniel felt a white-hot, lethal rage explode in his chest. His mother was already rotting in a prison cell, but the psychological torture she had inflicted upon his wife was still actively tearing them apart.
"Gregory!"
Daniel barked, his voice echoing violently off the high walls of the foyer.
"Sir?"
The butler rushed forward, looking terrified.
"Have the security team bring the SUV back around immediately. Pack three suitcases with Elena’s clothes, my clothes, and the baby's necessities,"
Daniel ordered rapidly, his eyes burning with absolute, uncompromising authority.
"We are not staying here. I am moving my family to the Four Seasons penthouse right now, and tomorrow morning, you are contacting the highest-tier real estate broker in the state. I want this entire estate listed, gutted, and sold before the end of the month."
"Yes, Mr. Vance. Immediately, sir,"
Gregory nodded frantically, rushing up the grand staircase.
Daniel pulled Elena tightly against his chest, pressing his lips to her trembling forehead.
"We are leaving, my love,"
May you like
Daniel whispered fiercely into her ear.
"You never have to step foot in this cursed house ever again."
