CHAPTER SEVEN The Witness Nobody Expected

CHAPTER SEVEN
The Witness Nobody Expected
Detective Morrison had enough evidence to keep Tyler behind bars.
But he still wanted something a jury could never ignore.
The truth.
Not from lawyers.
Not from forensic reports.
From someone who had no reason to lie.
That someone was seven years old.
Mason.
Lauren sat beside her son in the child advocacy center, tears silently rolling down her face as the interviewer placed a dollhouse-sized deck on the table.
"Can you show me where everyone was?"
Mason nodded.
He placed a tiny figure on the deck.
"That's Aunt Bridget."
Another.
"That's Daddy."
"And then?"
Mason reached out with both hands.
He pushed the little figure backward.
Hard.
The doll fell onto the floor.
"What happened next?" the interviewer asked.
Mason looked confused.
"Daddy said Aunt Bridget slipped."
He lowered his voice.
"But... she didn't."
Lauren broke down.
For months, she had convinced herself Tyler had only lost his temper.
Now she realized something even more horrifying.
Their son had witnessed everything.
That afternoon, Lauren walked into the police station.
"I want to change my statement."
Detective Morrison quietly switched on the recorder.
Lauren took a deep breath.
"My husband pushed Bridget."
She closed her eyes.
"And I lied because I was afraid."
At the county jail, Tyler learned his wife had become the prosecution's key witness.
He stared through the glass in disbelief.
"You promised."
Lauren nodded.
"I know."
"You said you'd protect me."
"I protected you for eleven years."
She slowly stood.
"I'm protecting my son now."
The call disconnected.
May you like
For the first time in his life...
Tyler was completely alone.
