Chapter 22 - The Final Boundary
The main lobby of Rose & Wren was lined with white marble.
My mother was standing there.
She looked much older than the last time I saw her.
The expensive jewelry was gone.
The designer handbag had frayed edges.
When she saw me roll toward her, her eyes grew red.
"My daughter..." she cried, stepping forward to hug me.
I raised a hand.
She froze.
"Why are you here?" I asked, my voice cold and definitive.
"I sent you a letter... I waited..."
"I have no obligation to answer letters from strangers."
She burst into heavy sobs.
"I'm your mother! I know your father and I were wrong. He left. I lost everything. You're all I have left..."
I looked at the woman who had stood by and watched me be thrown into a dark corner.
The one who stayed silent when I cried for help.
"You didn't come here because you love me."
I said, enunciating every word.
"You came here because you ran out of money. And you saw my face on the cover of Forbes."
She paled.
"No... I'm truly sorry..."
I shook my head.
"Your regret cannot give me back my legs."
