Chapter 42 - The Trojan Horse

Paris was a city bathed in golden light and historic grandeur, but beneath its romantic surface lay a ruthless, sophisticated business arena. We established our operational base in a sprawling suite at the Hôtel de Crillon, preparing to launch our most audacious public relations and financial campaign to date. The goal was to fracture the 'Syndicat de l'Est' from the inside, utilizing their own greed and vanity against them.

We didn't quietly acquire land as we had in London. Instead, we hosted a massive, highly publicized press conference at the Louvre. I stood before hundreds of international journalists, unveiling the 'Parisian Renaissance Initiative'.

"Rose & Wren is not here to replace the breathtaking history of Paris," I announced, projecting magnificent holographic renderings of sustainable, modern infrastructure seamlessly woven into classic Parisian architecture. "We are here to preserve it for the next century. We are committing four billion euros to retrofit the city's historic districts with zero-emission energy grids, advanced water purification systems, and eco-friendly transit hubs. And we invite the esteemed leaders of the Syndicat to partner with us in this glorious endeavor."

The public response was instantaneous and overwhelmingly positive. The citizens of Paris, exhausted by failing municipal infrastructure, championed the initiative. However, behind closed doors, the leaders of the Syndicat were absolutely furious at being publicly cornered.

Two days later, Julian and I were summoned to a private meeting at an exclusive chateau outside the city. The five patriarchs of the Syndicat sat around a centuries-old dining table, glaring at us with undisguised contempt.

"Your public spectacle was incredibly manipulative," spat Henri Dubois, the de facto leader of the coalition. "You are trying to force our hand by weaponizing public opinion. We do not want your American glass and steel polluting our heritage."

"My glass and steel will ensure your heritage doesn't crumble into dust, Henri," I replied smoothly, taking a seat without being offered one. "Your properties are failing modern environmental compliance codes. In three years, the EU will heavily fine you for carbon emissions. My initiative pays for your upgrades, entirely free of charge."

"And what do you demand in return?" Dubois asked, his eyes narrowing suspiciously.

"Exclusive development rights for the abandoned industrial sectors on the outskirts of the city," I stated, laying my cards on the table. "I want to build New Footprints Paris. You get your historic properties fully modernized, saving you billions, and I get the land you consider worthless. Refuse, and I will publicly retract the offer, explicitly telling the citizens of Paris that the Syndicat chose their own pride over the future of the city."

I leaned forward, the absolute authority of the Rose & Wren empire backing my words. "Checkmate, gentlemen. Do we have a deal?"
