Chapter 40 - The Absolute Surrender

We pushed open the heavy oak doors of the Vanguard boardroom without knocking. The atmosphere inside was suffocating, thick with panic and recrimination. The twelve members of the board of directors were shouting furiously at Marcus Sterling, who stood at the head of the table, looking pale, disheveled, and completely broken.
The shouting abruptly stopped the moment I walked into the room, flanked by Julian and our lead acquisition attorneys. I didn't wait for an invitation. I walked directly to the opposite end of the massive mahogany table and placed a single, thick legal folder on the polished wood.
"Good evening, gentlemen," I said, my voice echoing with absolute, uncompromising authority. "I understand you are having a difficult day. I am here to offer you a way out."
Sterling glared at me, his aristocratic mask completely shattered by sheer hatred. "You orchestrated this! You fed Elena Vance those poisoned blueprints! You set us up!"
"I simply built a trap, Marcus," I replied coldly, holding his gaze without a flicker of remorse. "You are the one who decided to step into it because you were too arrogant to innovate and too lazy to compete fairly. You stole what you thought was our future, and it burned your empire to the ground."
I turned my attention to the terrified board members. "Inside this folder is a binding acquisition agreement. Rose & Wren will assume Vanguard’s debts, pay the regulatory fines, and acquire all of your real estate assets. The buyout price is non-negotiable. If you sign it tonight, you walk away with a fraction of your wealth intact. If you refuse, I will personally hand the evidence of Marcus Sterling’s corporate espionage over to the federal authorities. Vanguard will be dissolved by the government, and every single one of you will face criminal indictments for conspiracy."
The boardroom was dead silent. The board members looked at the folder, then at Sterling, and finally at me. They were businessmen, and the math was agonizingly simple. Loyalty to an arrogant CEO was not worth federal prison.
The Chairman of the Board stepped forward, his hands trembling slightly, and picked up a gold pen. He didn't even look at Sterling as he signed the acquisition agreement, completely surrendering the centuries-old institution to my control.

I picked up the signed contract, handing it to Julian. The European market no longer had a king. It had a new emperor.
"Pack your office, Marcus," I said softly, turning my back on the ruined man. "You are officially evicted."
