Chapter 44 - The Berlin Ambush

With London conquered and Paris firmly secured through our brilliant, fractured alliance, Project Meridian was expanding at a terrifying velocity. Rose & Wren was no longer just an American powerhouse; we were the undisputed architects of the new European infrastructure. The financial media called our blitzkrieg expansion the most aggressive corporate maneuver of the century.
However, absolute power always attracts a new class of enemies.
We shifted our sights to Berlin, the industrial heart of Europe. It was meant to be the crown jewel of our continental expansion—a massive, high-tech logistical hub that would connect our New Footprints projects across the globe. But unlike London’s aristocratic arrogance or Paris’s cultural vanity, Berlin presented a cold, highly calculated resistance.
Julian and I were reviewing the initial zoning applications in our secure mobile command center en route to a meeting with the German Chancellor when the digital attack occurred.
"Sir, we have a massive problem," Julian suddenly announced, his tablet flashing violently with red warning indicators. "Our primary financial routing servers in the United States are under a coordinated, military-grade cyber assault."
I leaned forward, my pulse quickening. "A DDoS attack? Who is launching it?"
"It’s not a simple denial of service," Julian typed frantically, his eyes locked on the cascading streams of hostile code. "It’s an aggressive data wipe. Someone is systematically attempting to erase the digital property deeds for our entire European portfolio. If they succeed, our legal ownership of the land in London and Paris will be thrown into absolute chaos."
"Engage the ghost protocols," I commanded, refusing to let panic enter the room. "Isolate the European servers and sever the transatlantic connection."
"I'm trying, but the malware is incredibly sophisticated. It’s adapting to our firewalls in real-time," Julian grimaced, sweat forming on his brow. "This isn't a rival corporation. This is state-sponsored architecture."
I stared at the monitor, instantly calculating the strategic variables. Someone was trying to cripple our global expansion by erasing the foundation we had just built.
"Trace the origin," I demanded.
"It’s bouncing through heavily encrypted proxies in Moscow and Beijing," Julian reported. "But the initial injection point... it originated from a shell corporation headquartered right here in Berlin. It’s a shadow firm called 'Krieger Dynamics'."

A cold, dangerous smile touched my lips. They thought they could fight a digital war from the shadows and remain untouchable. They vastly underestimated the enemy they had just engaged.
"Turn the car around," I told the driver. "Cancel the meeting with the Chancellor. We are going to pay a visit to Krieger Dynamics, and we are going to burn their servers to the ground."
