Chapter 57

The grand reception hall felt incredibly quiet after Vance's departure. Noah exhaled a long, measured breath and turned to walk back toward his private office. As he entered the room, he found Evelyn standing by the fireplace, her hands gently resting on the warm mantelpiece.
"He threatened to destroy the foundation," Noah said quietly, walking over to pour two glasses of sparkling water. He handed one to his mother.
"Of course he did," Evelyn smiled softly, taking the glass. "Predators only know one language, Noah. When they encounter a wall they cannot climb, they attempt to tear it down. But they always underestimate the depth of the foundation."
"Apex Horizons is massive, Mom," Noah admitted, sinking into the leather armchair. "Sarah's initial dive showed they have billions in backing. They are deeply embedded in political networks. This isn't a localized fight like it was with Sterling or Mercer. This is a multinational machine that uses charity as a shield."
"Your father fought machines," Evelyn reminded him gently, sitting across from him. "He fought corrupt governments, greedy boards of directors, and endless litigation. Do you know how he won?"
"By holding the moral high ground," Noah answered instinctively.
"By holding the truth," Evelyn corrected. "The moral high ground is subjective in the court of public opinion. The truth is absolute. Elias Thorne relies on a beautiful facade to protect his operations. Your job is not to fight his army, Noah. Your job is to shatter the glass he hides behind. Once the world sees what Apex Horizons actually is, the machine will tear itself apart."
Noah nodded, the wisdom of his mother settling deeply into his bones. She was right. A defensive war was a losing proposition. They had to go on the offensive.
"I need to speak with Julian again," Noah said, standing up with renewed purpose. "If he managed to escape a facility that secure, he must know their weak points. He must have seen behind the curtain."

"Be gentle with him," Evelyn cautioned as Noah walked toward the door. "He is terrified of the dark. You must be the one to show him that the light is finally safe."
"I will," Noah promised, stepping out into the hallway, preparing to uncover the darkest secrets of Elias Thorne's empire.
