Chapter 15 - The Ghost in the Machine

Late that evening, long after the reporters had left and the foundation grounds were secured, Marcus Vance sat in his dimly lit office, staring intensely at three different computer monitors. The press conference had been a massive public relations victory for Noah, but Marcus knew that men like Arthur Sterling did not simply surrender after one lost battle. They escalated.
Marcus was running a deep, illegal-bordering trace on Vanguard Holdings, the offshore shell company funding Sterling’s hostile takeover. The digital breadcrumbs were intentionally convoluted, bouncing from the Cayman Islands to Switzerland, and then to a series of blind trusts in Panama.
"Come on, you bastard, make a mistake," Marcus muttered to himself, typing rapidly on his keyboard.
Suddenly, an alert pinged on his secondary screen. One of the shell accounts had recently authorized a massive wire transfer to a private security firm in New York. Marcus quickly cross-referenced the authorization signature. It was highly encrypted, but the routing number belonged to a domestic bank account that had been frozen six years ago by federal authorities.
Marcus’s blood ran cold as the decrypted name finally flashed onto the screen in bright green letters.
He grabbed his cell phone and dialed Evelyn’s number. She answered on the second ring, sounding exhausted.
"Marcus? It's past midnight. Is everything alright?" Evelyn asked, her voice hushed so as not to wake Noah down the hall.
"Evelyn, you need to sit down," Marcus said, his voice incredibly grave. "I cracked the offshore accounts backing Sterling's consortium."
"Who is it? A rival pharmaceutical company? A real estate mogul?"
"No," Marcus breathed out heavily. "It's Vanessa."
There was a dead, suffocating silence on the other end of the line. Evelyn felt all the air leave her lungs.
"That is impossible," Evelyn whispered, panic rising in her throat. "Vanessa was sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison for wire fraud and conspiracy. She shouldn't be out for another nine years."
"I just checked the federal inmate database," Marcus explained frantically. "She isn't there, Evelyn. She quietly secured an early parole three months ago due to 'good behavior' and prison overcrowding. She somehow managed to hide a massive portion of her brother's stolen funds in an untraceable crypto-wallet before they were arrested. She’s using that money to fund Sterling."

"She doesn't want the land," Evelyn realized, horror dawning on her. "She wants revenge for what Daniel and Eleanor did to her. She wants to destroy everything they built."
"We need to increase security at the estate immediately," Marcus warned. "Vanessa is a cornered, wealthy predator. She will stop at nothing."
