Chapter 18 - The Council of War

Evelyn picked up the envelope with trembling hands and rushed back to the house. Marcus had just arrived, flanked by two burly private security contractors who immediately began sweeping the perimeter of the estate. Noah was waiting in the kitchen, pacing anxiously.

Evelyn threw the envelope onto the kitchen island.

"She wants to destroy Noah," Evelyn gasped, finally letting her terrifying encounter catch up to her. She quickly relayed Vanessa's vicious ultimatum to Marcus and her son.

Marcus carefully opened the envelope, wearing latex gloves. He spread the documents across the granite counter. They were incredibly sophisticated forgeries. Bank transfers, fake emails, and fabricated ledgers that seemingly connected a younger Noah to Vanessa’s old offshore accounts.

"These are brilliant fakes," Marcus noted grimly, holding up a forged email to the light. "Given her history of fraud, the FBI would eventually figure out they are fake. But Vanessa is right about one thing: the investigation alone would freeze our assets. The charity would go bankrupt fighting the legal battle, and the media would crucify Noah."

Noah stared at the documents, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.

"She is trying to use me as leverage to force you to sell," Noah said, his voice remarkably calm given the circumstances. "She knows you will do anything to protect me, Mom."

"And I will," Evelyn declared fiercely. "I will not let her drag you into a courtroom. We will find another way."

"We can't sell the land," Noah argued, slamming his hand on the counter. "If we surrender, Vanessa wins. She’ll bulldoze the therapy center out of pure spite. We have to fight back. We have to turn the trap around on her."

Marcus rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "Vanessa is arrogant. She believes she holds all the cards because she thinks we are too honest to play dirty. But she has a weakness. She is violating her parole by possessing this kind of wealth and funding Sterling."

"How do we prove it?" Evelyn asked. "The crypto-wallets are untraceable."

"We don't trace her current money," Noah interjected, a brilliant, dangerous plan forming in his mind. "We make her steal new money. We offer her bait so incredibly tempting that her greed overrides her caution. We catch her committing a new crime, right in the open."

Marcus looked at the eighteen-year-old with genuine awe. "You are definitely your father's son, Noah. What kind of bait did you have in mind?"
