Chapter 19 - Setting the Trap

|

The plan they formulated over the next forty-eight hours was incredibly risky, requiring perfect execution. Marcus utilized his extensive legal connections to create a highly classified, completely legitimate 'ghost trust' within the foundation’s financial architecture. It was an account that appeared to hold an emergency reserve of ten million dollars, legally earmarked for the foundation’s expansion.

"The security on this account is intentionally flawed," Marcus explained to Noah and Evelyn as they sat in his downtown law office. "It’s a digital honeypot. We are going to leak the existence and the routing numbers of this account directly to Arthur Sterling, pretending it’s a bribe to make him back off the zoning lawsuit."

Evelyn frowned, tracing the rim of her coffee cup.

"Sterling is a shark, but he isn't stupid. He will know it's a trap."

"Sterling won't take the bait," Noah agreed with a sharp smile. "But Vanessa will. Her entire motivation is ego and revenge. When Sterling tells her about the ten million dollars just sitting there, completely vulnerable, she won't be able to resist taking it for herself to humiliate us completely."

"Exactly," Marcus nodded. "And the moment she attempts to initiate a wire transfer from that specific account, it triggers a silent alarm directly to the FBI cyber-crimes division. Because she is on federal parole, attempting to access restricted funds is an immediate, non-bailable felony offense. She will be sent straight back to maximum security."

"How do we get the account information to Sterling without looking suspicious?" Evelyn asked.

Noah adjusted his grip on his crutches. "I will do it. I am the chairman of the board. I will request a private, off-the-record meeting with Sterling to 'negotiate a surrender.' I will hand him the account details personally, acting like a terrified teenager who just wants the bad man to go away."

Evelyn immediately shook her head. "Absolutely not. I am not letting you sit in a room with that monster."

"Mom, I have to do this," Noah pleaded, his eyes filled with fierce determination. "Vanessa expects me to be weak. Sterling expects me to be a frightened kid. Let them underestimate me. It’s the only way they will believe the bribe is genuine."

Evelyn looked at her son, seeing the unbreakable steel beneath his gentle exterior. With a heavy, anxious heart, she finally nodded her consent.
