Chapter 44

Six weeks later, the summer sun shone brilliantly over the Whitmore Foundation. The damage to the aquatic center had been completely repaired, thanks in large part to an overwhelming surge of public donations following the exposure of Silas Mercer.

Today was the grand opening.

Hundreds of guests, families, and patients gathered around the massive, shimmering zero-gravity pool. The room smelled of clean water and fresh paint.

Noah stood at the edge of the pool, wearing a tailored suit, leaning on his crutches. Beside him stood Maya, looking radiant in a light summer dress. Over the past month and a half, working closely together to help David Collins settle his lawsuit against Aegis, a deep, undeniable connection had grown between them.

"You look nervous," Maya whispered playfully, bumping her shoulder against his.

"I'm not nervous about the speech," Noah smiled, looking at her with a warmth that made her heart flutter. "I'm nervous about the fact that half these kids are going to try and throw me in the pool the second I finish talking."

Maya laughed, a bright, beautiful sound. "I won't let them drown the Chairman."

Evelyn stepped up to the microphone, silencing the excited chatter in the room.

"Welcome, everyone, to the Daniel Whitmore Aquatic Therapy Center," Evelyn began, her voice echoing over the water. "This building is a testament to resilience. It was attacked by those who do not understand our mission, but it was rebuilt by the love of this community."

Evelyn turned and looked at Noah, her eyes shining with immense pride.

"And none of this would be possible without a leader who refuses to back down from the dark. My son, Noah."

The crowd cheered as Noah stepped up to the microphone.

"Water is a powerful thing," Noah said, looking at the children in their specialized wheelchairs lining the edge of the pool. "It can wash away the dirt, and it can carry weights that are too heavy for us to bear on land. For many of you, this pool will be the first time you feel completely weightless. The first time you feel entirely free."

Noah looked at Maya, then at his mother, and finally out at the families.

"This foundation was built to give you back your freedom. The doors are officially open. Let's swim."

A massive cheer erupted. Noah stepped back, watching with pure joy as the therapists began carefully lowering the first group of laughing, ecstatic children into the warm, healing water.
