Chapter 51

|

The pristine quiet of the Greenwich estate was a hard-won victory, but Noah Whitmore knew better than to believe that true peace was ever permanent. The world outside the thirty-acre sanctuary was still vast, cold, and entirely unpredictable. It was nearing midnight, the blizzard outside intensifying into a howling whiteout, when the secure red phone on Noah’s massive oak desk began to flash silently.

Noah set down his pen, the warmth of the hot chocolate his mother had brought him hours ago now just a distant memory. He pressed the receiver to his ear.

"Noah," the deep, steady voice of Marcus, his head of security, came through the encrypted line. "I apologize for waking you, but we have a situation at the north gate."

"I was already awake, Marcus," Noah replied smoothly, standing up and walking toward the bay windows. "What kind of situation? The roads are completely iced over."

"That’s exactly the problem," Marcus said, the sound of the howling wind bleeding through the speaker. "The perimeter motion sensors were tripped ten minutes ago. I sent a patrol unit out in the snowcat. They found a boy. He collapsed against the wrought iron gates. He’s unresponsive, half-frozen, and completely alone."

Noah’s heart hammered a familiar, protective rhythm against his ribs. The sanctuary was built for exactly this purpose, but no child should have been able to make it up the mountain road in a storm of this magnitude without freezing to death miles away.

"Get him to the medical wing immediately," Noah commanded, his voice shifting into absolute authority. "Wake Dr. Evans. I will meet you down there in five minutes."

"Already in motion," Marcus confirmed before cutting the line.

Noah threw on a heavy wool sweater and quickly descended the grand staircase of the main house. The Whitmore legacy was not just about maintaining wealth; it was about stepping into the freezing dark when the rest of the world looked away. He pushed open the heavy double doors leading to the subterranean medical corridor, bracing himself for whatever new tragedy the winter wind had just delivered to his doorstep.
