Chapter 23 - The Fall of the Glass Girl

The tactical breach of the downtown penthouse was swift, silent, and overwhelmingly decisive. Vanessa was still sitting at her laptop, watching the fake transfer progress bar spinning endlessly, when the heavy oak door of her apartment was shattered by a battering ram.
"FBI! Hands in the air! Step away from the computer!" heavily armed federal agents screamed, flooding the luxurious living room with tactical flashlights and drawn weapons.
Vanessa shrieked, jumping out of her chair in sheer terror. She raised her hands, her face completely drained of color.
"This is a mistake!" she screamed hysterically as two agents roughly grabbed her arms and slammed her against the wall to apply heavy steel handcuffs. "I didn't do anything! That money was given to me! It was a gift!"
The lead cyber-detective walked over to the laptop, looking at the glowing screen showing the attempted wire fraud from the Whitmore Foundation. He shook his head in disgust.
"A gift? You attempted to drain ten million dollars from a charity for disabled children, Ms. Vale," the detective said coldly. "Your parole is officially revoked. You are looking at twenty additional years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary. You’re never seeing the outside of a cell again."
Simultaneously, across town, Arthur Sterling was dragged out of his suburban mansion in his silk pajamas, screaming obscenities at the arresting officers and loudly blaming Vanessa for the entire operation. The press, tipped off by the massive police presence, swarmed both locations, capturing the humiliating arrests on live television.
By sunrise, the narrative had completely flipped. The morning news anchors who had harshly criticized Noah yesterday were now praising him as a brilliant young strategist who had heroically worked with the FBI to take down a massive corporate extortion ring.

In the Whitmore kitchen, Noah and Evelyn watched the television screen as Vanessa, looking disheveled, defeated, and completely broken, was shoved into the back of a federal squad car.
The nightmare was finally, permanently over. The glass girl had been shattered beyond repair.
