Chapter 4 - The Slap

"I didn't mean to, I swear, I didn't see you step back—" Amelia tried to explain, looking up from the floor.

"Get up!" Isabella shouted, her composure entirely gone. The guests recoiled. Evelyn Hartley stood up from her chair, her eyes narrowing dangerously.

Amelia stood slowly, her hands trembling by her sides. She looked directly at Isabella, their eyes locking. For a fraction of a second, a strange jolt passed through Isabella—a bizarre sense of looking into a distorted mirror. But her fury blinded her to it.

"You ruined my dress. You ruined my birthday!" Isabella screamed.

Without thinking, driven by a lifetime of entitlement and the crushing pressure to maintain a flawless image, Isabella raised her hand.

Smack.

The sharp, brutal sound of flesh striking flesh echoed through the cavernous ballroom. It was a sound so violent, so out of place in this environment of refined elegance, that several guests literally jumped.

Amelia stumbled backward, the force of the blow knocking her off balance. She caught herself on the edge of a guest's table, her hand instantly flying up to cover her stinging left cheek. A heavy diamond ring on Isabella’s finger had caught the delicate skin near Amelia’s eyebrow. A thin, bright red line of blood began to form, slowly tracing its way down Amelia's temple.

No one moved. No one stepped forward to help the waitress. The elite crowd simply watched, paralyzed by the shocking breach of decorum.

Isabella stood there, her chest heaving, her hand stinging from the impact. A wave of instant, nauseating regret washed over her, but her pride refused to let her back down. She waited for the waitress to cry, to run away, to beg for her job.

But Amelia did none of those things.

Slowly, Amelia lowered her hand from her cheek. Tears welled up in her bright green eyes—eyes that matched Isabella's perfectly. But instead of shouting, instead of demanding an apology, Amelia's lips curved into a sad, trembling, heartbreaking smile.

Softly, in a voice that carried through the dead silent ballroom almost like a ghost's whisper, she spoke.

"Happy birthday… Isabella."

She paused, the blood dripping down her face.

"…Sister."
