Chapter 3 - The Collision

The party was in full swing. The champagne was flowing, laughter rang out in polite, measured bursts, and the photographers flashed their cameras at carefully calculated intervals. Isabella was in her element, gracefully navigating through a circle of influential investors.

"Your grandmother tells me you'll be taking over the European acquisitions next quarter, Isabella," a silver-haired banker noted, raising his glass.

"That is the plan, Richard," Isabella smiled, her tone exuding absolute authority. "We are looking to expand aggressively into the tech sector."

As she spoke, she took a half-step backward to allow a photographer a better angle of the group. She didn't look. She didn't think she needed to. The world was supposed to clear a path for a Hartley.

Amelia was walking briskly past the group, her eyes briefly distracted by the imposing figure of Evelyn Hartley sitting at the head table. She didn't anticipate Isabella’s sudden step backward.

The collision was minor, but disastrous.

Amelia’s shoulder bumped hard into Isabella’s back. The heavy silver tray tipped. Three crystal flutes toppled over, shattering against the marble floor. A splash of chilled, vintage champagne flew through the air, landing squarely on the skirt of Isabella’s custom royal blue ballgown.

The music seemed to grind to a halt.

The low hum of conversation vanished instantly, replaced by a collective, horrified gasp from the surrounding guests. Time seemed to freeze. Amelia dropped to her knees immediately, her hands shaking violently as she reached out to try and wipe the spilled liquid from the hem of the dress with her bare hands.

"I am so sorry. I'm so, so sorry, ma'am," Amelia stammered, her voice breathless with panic.

Isabella looked down at the dark, spreading stain on the silk. The pressure of the night, the weight of her grandmother's expectations, and the sheer shock of the imperfection snapped something inside her. The carefully constructed mask of the perfect heiress shattered.

Isabella’s face twisted with raw, unfiltered anger.

"How dare you?" Isabella's voice sliced through the silent room like a blade. "Do you have any idea what you've just done?"
