Chapter 39 - The Watch's Promise

Later that evening, after the festival had ended and the bakery was quiet, Isabella and Amelia sat together on the small balcony of their apartment.

The night air was cool and crisp, the sky above them blanketed in a spectacular array of stars.

Isabella reached into her pocket and pulled out the polished silver pocket watch—the very same watch they had repaired together on their birthday.

She clicked it open. The steady, rhythmic ticking of the restored gears filled the quiet air between them.

Inside the cover, the faded photograph of them as babies sat perfectly next to the polaroid of them laughing in the flour-covered kitchen.

"It keeps perfect time now,"

Isabella whispered, her thumb gently tracing the silver edge.

Amelia leaned over, resting her head on Isabella’s shoulder.

"It doesn't matter how much time we lost, Izzy,"

Amelia said softly.

"What matters is the time we have left."

Isabella closed the watch with a soft, satisfying click. The past was permanently sealed away. The future was unwritten, wide open, and incredibly bright.
