Chapter 10 - The Confession

Amelia looked at Isabella. She saw the sheer, unadulterated devastation in her twin’s eyes. Amelia had spent the last three weeks hating Isabella, imagining her as a spoiled, cruel princess who reveled in her stolen wealth. The slap had only reinforced that image.
But seeing Isabella now—shaking, sobbing, completely broken by the betrayal of their grandmother—Amelia realized they were both victims of Evelyn Hartley. Isabella had just been kept in a much more expensive cage.
Amelia nodded slowly. "I believe you."
She then turned her gaze back to the matriarch. "But someone here did know. Every single day for thirty years."
Every eye in the room that hadn't already fled turned back toward Evelyn. The powerful woman looked around, realizing that the fear and respect she had commanded for decades had vanished. In their eyes, she was no longer a brilliant CEO; she was a monster.
For several agonizing seconds, Evelyn said nothing. She straightened her posture, desperately trying to cling to the remnants of her dignity.
"I thought I was protecting the family," Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a harsh, defensive gravel. "Everything I did, the sacrifices I made, were to ensure the Hartley name survived. You have no idea the burdens I carried to keep that roof over your head, Isabella."

"You protected a lie," Amelia replied, her voice ringing with the moral high ground that Evelyn could never buy. "You stole an entire life. You stole my mother. You stole my sister."
Evelyn opened her mouth to argue, but finding no allies in the sea of judging faces, she snapped her mouth shut. She turned sharply and, with a stiff, dignified gait that fooled no one, walked out of the ballroom, leaving her granddaughters in the wreckage she had created.
