Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the System
By the third month of Claire's leadership, the company was stabilizing, but the ghost of Ethan Bennett was still haunting the servers.
Richard Donovan walked into Claire’s office, his expression grim.
"We found a backdoor in the accounting software," Richard explained, laying a tablet on her desk. "Someone has been trying to siphon funds from the primary operational accounts into a shell company."
Claire stared at the screen.
"Is it Ethan?"
"He's in a maximum-security holding facility awaiting trial," Richard said. "But he has loyalists. People who still think he's going to beat the charges and come back to reward them."
Claire leaned back in her chair.
"Trace the IP address. Find out exactly whose login credentials were used."
"We already did," Richard replied. "It was David Thorne. The Chief Operations Officer."

Claire felt a cold spike of anger. Thorne had smiled at her warmly just yesterday.
"Call the police, Richard. And call the press. We aren't hiding the rot anymore. We are dragging it out into the sunlight."
