Chapter 31 - The Tides of Change
The serene tranquility of the dawn beach lingered in Claire’s mind long after Marcus had driven her back to the towering glass metropolis.
She sat in the back of the armored sedan, watching the city awaken, feeling a profound, unshakeable sense of peace. The ghosts of Vanguard Industries had been entirely exorcised, their ashes scattered and transformed into the cornerstone of the Haven Foundation.
But ruling a multi-billion dollar empire meant that peace was often a fleeting luxury.
As the car pulled into the subterranean executive garage of Sterling Enterprises, her tablet chimed with an encrypted, high-priority notification.
"Ms. Sterling,"
Marcus said, glancing in the rearview mirror as he parked the heavy vehicle.
"The executive security team has flagged a high-level anomaly in the European server sectors."
Claire’s expression hardened instantly, the tranquil beach fading into the sharp, calculated focus of a CEO defending her territory.
"What kind of anomaly, Marcus?"
Claire asked, stepping out of the vehicle and straightening her tailored suit jacket.
"A concentrated cyber intrusion, ma'am,"
Marcus replied, falling into step beside her.
"Someone is actively trying to breach the archived financial records of Ethan's former offshore accounts."
Claire did not panic. She did not feel the familiar, suffocating terror that Ethan’s name used to invoke. Instead, she felt a cold, clinical curiosity.
"Ethan is rotting in a federal cell with no outside communication,"
Claire noted, her heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor of the elevator lobby.
"This is not him. This is someone who survived the purge. Someone looking for the leftover scraps of his criminal empire."
"Shall I lock down the servers, Ms. Sterling?"
Marcus asked protectively.
"No,"

Claire smiled, a dangerous, razor-sharp expression.
"Leave a single backdoor open. Let them walk right into the trap. We are going to find out exactly who is brave enough to test me."
