Chapter 7 - The Foundation's First Test

The paint in the new office of the Claire Bennett Foundation was still drying when the phone rang for the first time.
It was late on a Tuesday evening. Claire was alone, organizing legal pamphlets.
She picked up the receiver.
"Claire Bennett Foundation. How can I help you?"
On the other end, there was only the sound of ragged, terrified breathing.
"He's asleep," a woman's voice finally whispered, shaking violently. "But he took my wallet. He took my keys. If I leave... I have nowhere to go. I have a little girl. Please."
Claire closed her eyes. The memory of that exact fear hit her like a physical blow. But she didn't freeze. She was no longer the victim; she was the lifeline.
"Listen to me," Claire said, her voice dropping into a calm, commanding register. "What is your name?"
"Elena."
"Elena, I am going to send a private car to the corner of your street in exactly ten minutes. You do not need money. You do not need keys. Wrap your daughter in a blanket and walk out the door."
"Will it be safe?" Elena sobbed.
"I promise you," Claire said. "You are never going back there again."
That night, Claire sat in the foundation's emergency housing unit, watching Elena's daughter sleep peacefully on a new mattress.
