Chapter 18 - A Letter from Federal Prison

It arrived on a Tuesday.

A standard white envelope with a federal penitentiary return address.

Claire's assistant, a sharp young man named Leo, looked nervous as he handed it to her along with the rest of the mail.

"Do you want me to shred it, Mrs. Bennett?"

Claire looked at Ethan's handwriting. Even now, he was trying to reach into her life. Trying to pull a string, hoping she was still attached to the other end.

She didn't feel a spike of fear. She didn't feel anger. She felt absolutely nothing.

Ethan was just a ghost.

"No, Leo, don't shred it," Claire said casually.

She dropped the unopened envelope into the trash can beside her desk.

"Shredding it means it contains something important. It belongs in the garbage."

She turned back to her computer, completely forgetting about the letter before it even hit the bottom of the bin.
