Chapter 20 - The Old Apartment

On the exact anniversary of the day she finally left Ethan, Claire drove to the outskirts of the city.
She parked her car in front of a rundown brick apartment building.
This was the place she had fled to. A tiny, one-bedroom unit with a leaky faucet and a lock she had reinforced herself. It was the place where she had spent her first night shivering in fear, wondering if Ethan's men were coming for her.
She stood on the sidewalk, looking up at the second-floor window.
Someone else lived there now. There were bright yellow curtains hanging in the glass.
She remembered the woman she had been in that room. Terrified. Broken. Believing that her life was functionally over.
