Chapter 6 - The Genesis Document

The rain had finally begun to slow, transforming from a violent deluge into a cold, persistent drizzle. But for Daniel, standing in the mud beside the ambulance, the storm had just moved inside his mind.
Detective Vance held out the clear plastic evidence bag. Inside it was the document retrieved from Veronica’s wrecked SUV. The blue and red lights of the police cruisers strobed across the wet paper, illuminating the bold, black letters printed at the top.
CONFIDENTIAL - PROJECT GENESIS: GENETIC LINEAGE VERIFICATION
Daniel stared at the words. His brain, still foggy from the adrenaline, the car crash, and the sheer terror of the cliff, struggled to process their meaning. He reached out with his uninjured right hand—the same hand that had just held his wife over the abyss—and took the plastic bag.
"What is this, Detective?" Daniel asked, his voice hoarse, raspy from screaming.
"I was hoping you could tell me, Mr. Daniel," Vance replied, crossing his arms against the cold. "My officers found a whole briefcase full of these files on the passenger floorboard of your stepmother’s vehicle. It doesn't look like standard corporate paperwork. It looks like medical records."
Daniel looked down through the plastic. The first page was a summary report from a highly classified private medical facility, dated nearly twenty-four years ago. As his eyes scanned the text, the blood in his veins turned to ice.
The document detailed a highly unethical, incredibly expensive procedure. It wasn't about stocks, bonds, or trust funds. It was about DNA.
Subject Alpha: Arthur Blackwood (Deceased).
Subject Matrix: Unidentified Surrogate 04.
Resulting Embryo ID: V-089.
Daniel swallowed hard, a wave of nausea washing over him. Arthur Blackwood was his father. But who was the surrogate? And what was Embryo V-089?
He flipped the page within the plastic bag. The second sheet was a genetic matching profile. It compared the DNA of the embryo to a specific set of required genetic markers. But it was the handwritten note at the bottom of the page, scrawled in black ink, that made Daniel’s breath catch in his throat. He recognized the handwriting instantly. It was his father’s sharp, aggressive cursive.
“The true heir must never know who her biological mother is. She is to be monitored until reproductive maturity. Secure the bloodline at all costs.”
"Her biological mother..." Daniel whispered.
He flipped to the third page. Attached to the top left corner was a small, faded polaroid photograph of a newborn baby girl. Beneath the photo, typed neatly, was a name.
Name assigned by adoptive matrix: Valeria.
Daniel stumbled backward, his boots slipping in the mud. The plastic bag fell from his trembling hand, landing in a puddle.
"Mr. Daniel?" Detective Vance stepped forward, catching him by his good arm. "Are you alright? What does it mean?"
It meant everything was a lie.
Valeria wasn't just a woman he had met by chance at a charity gala three years ago. She hadn't accidentally bumped into him. Their romance, their marriage, even this baby growing inside her—it had all been orchestrated by a ghost. His father, a ruthless billionaire who had died of a sudden stroke five years ago, had somehow genetically selected, monitored, and positioned Valeria into Daniel's life.
She was a lab-created answer to a twisted inheritance clause.
Suddenly, a commotion near the police cruisers pulled Daniel from his shock.
Two burly police officers were dragging Veronica out of the back of an ambulance. A paramedic had bandaged her bleeding forehead, but she was now in handcuffs, her arms secured behind her back. Despite the mud ruining her designer suit, she walked with her chin held high, radiating a toxic, venomous pride.
"Wait," Daniel growled, ripping his arm out of Vance’s grip.
Ignoring the excruciating pain in his dislocated left shoulder, Daniel marched across the muddy overlook. The police officers saw his face and instinctively stepped back, giving him a few feet of space, though they kept a firm grip on Veronica’s arms.
Daniel stopped inches from his stepmother. He looked into her cold, calculating eyes.
"You knew," Daniel hissed, his voice vibrating with a dangerous, lethal rage. "You knew what my father did. You knew who she was."
Veronica looked at him, and for the first time since this nightmare began, she smiled. It wasn't a smile of a defeated woman. It was the smile of someone who knew a terrifying secret.
"You thought I was trying to steal your inheritance?" Veronica taunted, her voice a soft, mocking whisper.
"You tried to kill my wife and my unborn child!" Daniel roared, stepping closer.
"I tried to save this family, you naive fool," she spat back, her smile vanishing, replaced by a fierce intensity. "Do you have any idea what your father unleashed? Do you know who funded Project Genesis?"
Daniel stared at her, breathing heavily.
"You think the money is yours?" Veronica laughed, a dry, bitter sound. "The estate is nothing. The real power is in that baby’s blood. And the people who helped your father create her... they are coming to collect their investment."
"Get her out of here," Daniel ordered the officers, turning his back on her in disgust.
As they shoved Veronica into the back of the squad car, she pressed her face against the wet window, shouting through the glass.

"I was protecting you, Daniel! If that child is born, they will kill you both to take it! You’ll see!"
The cruiser sped away, its red taillights disappearing into the stormy night. Daniel stood alone in the mud, the cold rain washing over him, realizing that the cliff was only the beginning of the fall.
