Chapter 14 - The Forest Run

The smuggling tunnel was tight, suffocating, and reeked of mold and wet earth. Daniel and Valeria crawled in pitch blackness for what felt like an eternity, the muffled sounds of the burning cabin growing fainter above them.

Finally, the tunnel sloped upward, ending at a rusted iron grate hidden beneath a dense thicket of blackberry bushes. Daniel kicked the grate open with his heavy boots, pushing through the thorny branches to emerge into the freezing, rain-soaked pine forest.

They were about a quarter-mile behind the safehouse. Through the towering trees, they could see the flames engulfing the cabin, and above it, the massive black helicopter hovering like a mechanical vulture.

"They have thermal imaging," Daniel gasped, leaning heavily against a tree. The blood loss from his chest wounds was beginning to catch up with him, making his vision swim. "If we run out in the open, we'll light up on their screens like beacons."

Valeria looked up at the sky, the freezing rain mixing with the tears on her face. She looked at Daniel, seeing the exhaustion pale his skin. He was dying to protect her.

"Then we make ourselves cold," Valeria said, her voice surprisingly steady.

Before Daniel could stop her, she dropped to her knees in a massive puddle of freezing, thick mud. She began scooping the icy sludge with her good hand, smearing it over her face, her hair, and her hospital gown.

"Valeria, you'll freeze to death!" Daniel protested, trying to pull her up.

"If they see us, we die anyway!" she shot back, grabbing a handful of mud and pressing it against his bleeding chest. "Cover yourself, Daniel. Now."

He stared at her, deeply humbled by her fierce resilience. He dropped to his knees beside her, coating his clothes and skin in the freezing mud, masking their body heat from the sky above.

"Move," Daniel ordered, pulling her up.

They ran. They stumbled through the unforgiving terrain of the mountain forest, their boots slipping on wet roots and jagged rocks. Every step was a battle against gravity and exhaustion. Valeria kept one arm wrapped around her belly, protecting her child, while using her other hand to help support Daniel’s weight when he faltered.

Above them, the helicopter began its search pattern. The massive spotlight cut through the canopy like a pillar of solid light, accompanied by the deep, rhythmic thudding of the rotor blades.

"Under the roots!" Daniel hissed, pulling her toward an massive, ancient pine tree that had been uprooted in a previous storm.

They dove beneath the tangled web of massive roots, pressing their mud-caked bodies against the wet earth just as the spotlight swept over their location.

The light hovered over the fallen tree. Through the cracks in the roots, Valeria could see the beam illuminating the rain. She held her breath, closing her eyes. If they were seen, they had nowhere left to run.

But the mud worked. The thermal cameras in the helicopter registered nothing but the ambient temperature of the cold forest. The spotlight moved on, sweeping further down the mountain.

Daniel let out a ragged breath, resting his forehead against the dirt.

"They're moving south," he whispered. "But it won't matter. They're just following the GPS signal. As long as that chip is in your neck, they will never stop hunting us."

Valeria touched the back of her neck, feeling the tiny, hard lump beneath her skin. She looked at Daniel in the darkness, her eyes hardening with a terrifying resolve.

"Then we have to take it out," she said.
