A Dangerous Witness

The words phase two echoed in Sarah Collins' mind long after the hidden camera had been removed from the Harper estate.
She didn't sleep that night.
By sunrise, two FBI agents had joined the investigation.
Whatever organization stood behind Lucas Reed was no longer treating the case as a simple fraud.
They were protecting something much bigger.
Ethan looked out the kitchen window as another police cruiser rolled through the front gate.
The mansion had become a fortress.
Uniformed officers patrolled the grounds.
Security checkpoints had replaced friendly greetings.
Claire placed a plate of pancakes in front of him.
"You should eat."
"I'm not hungry."
She sat beside him.
"You haven't been outside in four days."
"I know."
"You miss school."
He smiled weakly.
"I even miss math."
Claire laughed quietly for the first time in weeks.
It disappeared almost as quickly as it came.
Nathan entered carrying his phone.
"Sarah's on her way."
Ethan looked up.
"Did they find Lucas?"
Nathan shook his head.
"Not yet."
Detective Collins arrived with two unfamiliar agents.
"This is Special Agent David Ramirez."
"And Agent Lisa Morgan."
Both nodded politely before getting straight to business.
Sarah opened a large evidence folder.
"We need Ethan's help."
Nathan immediately frowned.
"My son has already been through enough."
"I understand."
Sarah looked at Ethan.
"But witnesses often remember details after the initial shock wears off."
Ethan nodded.
"I'll help."
The investigators spread dozens of photographs across the dining table.
Cars.
Buildings.
Security footage.
Business associates.
Sarah pointed to one image.
"Have you ever seen this man?"
Ethan studied the photograph.
Lucas Reed.
He shook his head.
"No."
She placed another picture beside it.
Still nothing.
Then Agent Ramirez slid over a blurry image taken from a nearby gas station.
Only part of a man's face was visible.
Ethan froze.
"I've seen him."
Everyone looked at him.
"Where?"
Ethan leaned closer.
"I couldn't remember before."
He pointed at the picture.
"The day Dad introduced Vanessa to us."
Nathan frowned.
"What about it?"
"I was outside shooting basketball."
"I missed my shot."
"The ball rolled toward the guest parking area."
Claire listened carefully.
"And?"
"There was a black SUV parked near the gate."
"I thought someone was waiting for directions."
Sarah quickly took notes.
"Did you see who was inside?"
Ethan nodded slowly.
"This man."
He tapped the photograph again.
"He wasn't looking at the house."
"He was looking at Vanessa."
Nathan's heartbeat quickened.
"You never told us."
"I didn't think it mattered."
Sarah exchanged a glance with Agent Ramirez.
"It matters now."
An hour later, investigators drove Ethan to the gas station where the photograph had been taken.
The manager greeted Sarah immediately.
"We've already copied the surveillance footage."
Sarah smiled.
"We'd like to review one more day."
The manager loaded archived recordings.
Hours of footage rolled across the screen.
Cars entered.
Cars left.
Nothing unusual.
Then Ethan suddenly leaned forward.
"Stop."
The technician paused the video.
Ethan pointed toward the corner of the screen.
"There."
A black SUV.
Same vehicle.
Same silver wheels.
The timestamp made Sarah's eyes widen.
"This was six weeks before Vanessa moved into the mansion."
The footage continued.
Lucas stepped out of the SUV.
He wasn't alone.
Another man climbed from the passenger seat.
His face remained hidden beneath a baseball cap.
The two men stood beside the vehicle for several minutes.
Watching.
Waiting.
Then Vanessa's car entered the parking lot.
She parked several spaces away.
Lucas never approached her.
Instead...
The second man walked over.
He handed Vanessa a thick envelope.
She slipped it into her purse without opening it.
Then all three vehicles drove away separately.
Nathan stared at the screen.
"So they were meeting long before any of us knew."
Sarah nodded.
"And they were careful enough never to arrive together."
Back at headquarters, forensic technicians enhanced the video frame by frame.
The baseball cap hid most of the second man's face.
But one detail couldn't be missed.
A tattoo wrapped around his left wrist.
Agent Morgan enlarged the image.
"I've seen this before."
She hurried to another computer.
Minutes later she returned carrying an old case file.
"The tattoo belongs to Marcus Doyle."
Sarah frowned.
"The former security consultant?"
Lisa nodded.
"He disappeared three years ago."
Nathan looked confused.
"What does a security consultant have to do with financial fraud?"
Sarah answered quietly.
"He specialized in defeating surveillance systems."
Everyone fell silent.
Daniel slowly understood.
"He taught Lucas how to erase security footage."
Sarah nodded.
"And probably much more."
That evening, Ethan finally returned to the mansion.
He headed upstairs, exhausted.
As he reached his bedroom door, something caught his attention.
A small cardboard box sat on the floor.
No shipping label.
No return address.
Only his name written neatly across the top.
ETHAN.
His stomach tightened.
"Dad?"
Nathan hurried upstairs.
"What is it?"
Ethan pointed.
"I didn't leave that there."
Within seconds, officers evacuated the hallway.
A bomb technician carefully examined the package.
After several tense minutes, he nodded.
"It's safe."
He slowly opened the lid.
Inside was no explosive.
No weapon.
Only a single basketball.
The same brand Ethan used every afternoon.
Taped to it was a handwritten note.
Sarah read it aloud.
Next time... don't miss the shot.
The hallway fell completely silent.
Ethan's face turned pale.
Nathan wrapped an arm around his son without saying a word.
Sarah folded the note into an evidence bag.
"They know exactly who exposed them."
Nathan looked at her.
"What do we do now?"
Sarah's expression became resolute.
"We stop treating Ethan like a witness."
She looked directly at the frightened teenager.
May you like
"Because starting tonight..."
"...he's the target."
