Chapter 26 - The Shattered Trust

The return to the Harper mansion felt entirely different than the triumphant arrival after the gala just twenty-four hours earlier.
The storm had passed, leaving the city washed clean, but the psychological debris of Arthur’s betrayal littered their lives.
Nathan and Claire walked through the front doors, exhausted, bruised, and emotionally drained. The sun was just beginning to rise, casting long, pale shadows across the foyer.
Ethan and Michael were waiting in the living room.
When Ethan saw his parents, he sprinted across the room, nearly knocking Nathan over in a fierce, desperate hug. Claire wrapped her arms around both of them, burying her face in her son’s shoulder, silently crying tears of profound relief.
"You did it, Ethan," Nathan whispered, holding his son tight. "You saved the foundation. You saved us."
"I just wrote the code, Dad," Ethan murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "Mom is the one who played demolition derby with a federal suspect."
Claire managed a weak, exhausted laugh, stepping back to wipe her eyes. "I think we're going to need a new car."
Michael stood near the fireplace, his posture heavy with guilt.
"I am so sorry, Nathan," Michael said, his voice breaking. "If I had told you about Silas... if I had told you Emily's mother was terrified of a cartel ghost... maybe Arthur wouldn't have been able to get this close."
Nathan walked over to his brother. He didn't yell. He didn't throw a punch. The anger had burned out, replaced by a deep, weary understanding of how manipulation worked.
"Arthur built the foundation with us, Michael," Nathan said quietly. "He sat at this table. He drafted the legal documents. He played us all perfectly. You didn't know Silas was Arthur. None of us did."
"How does a high-profile corporate lawyer become a cartel cryptographer?" Claire asked, sitting heavily on the sofa, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders.
"Agent Collins is tearing his life apart right now," Nathan explained. "Arthur wasn't just a lawyer. He used his firm to launder money for international syndicates. Marcus's fraud fund was just one of his many piggy banks. When we exposed Marcus, we accidentally froze fifty million dollars of cartel cash that Arthur was responsible for."
"So, Arthur was desperate," Ethan realized, sitting down at the coffee table. "The cartel was probably threatening him to get their money back."
"Exactly," Nathan nodded. "He tried to extort us to unfreeze the accounts, to save his own life from his bosses."
The room fell silent as the terrifying reality of Arthur’s final words at the pier settled over them.
"Dad," Ethan said hesitantly. "Arthur said... he said the cartels would come after us next."
Nathan looked at his son, his expression hardening into absolute, unbreakable resolve.

"Arthur was a coward trying to scare us," Nathan lied smoothly, protecting his family. "The FBI has the money, and Arthur is in a supermax facility. We are safe."
But deep down, Nathan knew the truth. Cartels didn't forgive, and they never forgot.
