Chapter 29 - The Phantom Network

For the next forty-eight hours, Ethan lived in his cyber-lab.
He meticulously crafted the digital honey-pot, constructing a fake Cayman Islands routing network that looked perfectly authentic. He seeded it with complex, highly plausible cryptographic errors—just enough "vulnerability" to make a greedy federal agent believe they had discovered a backdoor into the frozen fifty million dollars.
"It's ready," Ethan announced on Thursday night, rubbing his tired eyes.
Sarah was sitting on the basement sofa, drinking her fifth cup of coffee. She walked over to the monitors.
"How do we deploy it?" she asked.
"I’ve encrypted the fake ledger into a classified internal memo," Ethan explained, pointing to a single file on his screen. "I just need you to log into your FBI remote portal and place this file into the shared secure drive used by the senior task force. Only the six people with clearance will be able to see it."
Sarah logged into her encrypted terminal, her hands remarkably steady despite the massive risk she was taking. If the Bureau caught her planting fake files, her career would end instantly.
She dragged the honey-pot file into the shared folder.
"It's live," Sarah breathed.
"Now, we wait," Ethan said, activating his tracking software. A massive, wireframe map of the FBI field office appeared on his secondary monitor. "The moment anyone opens that file, their terminal will light up red on this map."
Friday morning passed agonizingly slowly.
Nathan paced the basement, unable to focus on his foundation work. Claire brought down sandwiches, her anxiety mirroring the tense atmosphere in the room.
By 2:00 PM, nothing had happened.
"Maybe the mole is laying low," Nathan suggested. "With Arthur arrested, they have to know it's too dangerous to make a move."
"The cartel doesn't accept 'laying low' as an excuse for losing fifty million dollars," Sarah replied, staring intensely at the wireframe map. "The mole is under massive pressure to deliver. They will check the files."
At exactly 3:45 PM, a sharp, high-pitched beep echoed through the lab.
Ethan practically threw himself into his chair.
"Got a bite!" Ethan shouted, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "Someone just opened the backdoor ledger!"
On the wireframe map, a single terminal on the fourth floor of the FBI building began pulsing a bright, violent red.
"Trace the terminal ID," Sarah commanded, leaning over Ethan’s shoulder, her heart pounding. "Who is logged into that machine?"
Ethan ran the reverse IP trace, breaking through the internal Bureau masking in seconds.
The name flashed across the screen in bold, undeniable letters.
USER ID: RAMIREZ, D. - SENIOR SPECIAL AGENT

Sarah stopped breathing. The color completely drained from her face.
"Ramirez," she whispered, her voice cracking with profound betrayal. "My partner."
