Chapter 37 - The Corridors of Power

The firefight in the foyer lasted less than thirty seconds.
The cartel mercenaries were highly trained, but they were vastly outnumbered and entirely outgunned by the furious, overwhelming force of the federal SWAT operatives. Realizing they were trapped, the mercenaries threw down their weapons and surrendered, dropping to their knees with their hands behind their heads.
Agent Sarah Collins, wearing heavy tactical armor over her windbreaker, sprinted up the grand staircase, her weapon raised.
She found Nathan and Ethan crouched behind the bullet-riddled wall, both exhausted but unharmed.
"Clear!" Sarah shouted down to her team, lowering her weapon. She looked at Nathan, letting out a massive breath of relief. "You're both okay."
"Claire and Emily," Nathan gasped, standing up, his legs shaking from the adrenaline dump. "They're in the panic room."
"My men are clearing the basement now," Sarah assured him. "The house is secure, Nathan. It's over."
Ten minutes later, the heavy steel door of the panic room swung open.
Claire ran out, tears streaming down her face, and threw herself into Nathan and Ethan’s arms. Michael followed closely behind, holding a terrified Emily, but breathing a heavy sigh of absolute relief when he saw his brother standing tall.
The family stood in the center of their ruined kitchen, surrounded by FBI agents, broken glass, and the smell of gunpowder. The physical structure of their home was destroyed, but the family remained perfectly intact.
Sarah walked over to them, holding a secure radio.
"The strike team is entirely in custody," Sarah reported. "And thanks to the operational data we recovered from Ramirez, the DEA just launched simultaneous raids on three cartel safehouses across the border. We didn't just stop the hit; we severed the head of the snake."
"What about Ramirez?" Michael asked, his voice bitter.
"Ramirez will spend the rest of his life in federal prison," Sarah stated coldly. "He traded his badge for cartel money, and he lost everything."
Nathan looked around the shattered remnants of his home. The cost of exposing the truth had been astronomical. They had lost their sense of security, their privacy, and nearly their lives.
But as he looked at Claire, holding Ethan tightly, and Michael comforting Emily, he realized that the foundation of their family had never been stronger.
"We need to rebuild," Nathan said quietly, wrapping his arm around Claire's waist.
"Not the house," Claire corrected softly, looking up at him. "The house is just wood and glass. We rebuild our lives."
Ethan looked at the ruined server racks visible through the shattered ceiling of the basement.
"I'll need a new computer," Ethan smiled faintly.
May you like
Nathan laughed, a genuine, hearty sound that cut through the darkness of the night. "You can have whatever computer you want, Ethan."
The war was truly over.
